Secondary bacterial infection not important in early stages. At higher risk of bacterial infection if:
- receiving gastric acid suppression (antacids, H2 receptor antagonists, proton pump inhibitors)
- receiving enteral feeds
- gastroparesis
- small bowel obstruction.
