No role for prophylactic antibiotics. Reassess patient in 24-48 hours – if x-ray abnormality and risk factors of receiving gastric acid suppression (antacids, H₂ receptor antagonists, proton pump inhibitors), receiving enteral feeds, gastroparesis or small bowel obstruction, consider antibiotic therapy.
